Lots of pretty pictures in this one!
I love the Updike-Sittenfeld comparison!! I thought immediately of “A&P”
I love love love the Philadelphia flower show (so great that you were there for it) and your photos are so great and capture so much! I was thinking I wanted to read Sittenfeld!
I read and enjoyed Prep when it was published... and have forgotten all of it. Should I reread before Sittenfeld's latest?
Incidentally, she's one of the few famous people I have seen in the wild--at a playground in St Louis. I was too star struck to say hello.
My friend went to high school with her so I always feel “famous-person-adjacent” when her name comes up.
I just finished the first book of her stories and LOVED it and can't wait for this (but might read Prep first).
She thanks your sister in the acknowledgements! No need to reread, so long as you remember the vibe (angsty outsider). It could stand alone.
GET OUT. I will have to check in with Beth!
and, apropos of your last point, rules are made to be broken anyway, so read what you like even if you have rules about what you are reading!
I am not going to make it to the Flower Show this year but can we make a date to see it together next year?
Yes! Hopefully with all the PA children? And the who-knows-where-they-will-be child if she wants to come too!
